Could IHG finally be cutting one of the most popular ongoing hotel promotions out there? It would appear so…
IHG REWARDS CLUB POINTBREAKS
For the past decade, IHG Rewards Club has been offering their PointBreaks promotion.
In short, every 3 months IHG has published a list of hotels that can be booked as reward nights at a significant discount. I’ve written about this promotion numerous times (like HERE, HERE, and HERE).
A few years ago, it was standard for all hotels on the Pointbreaks list to cost 5,000 points per night.
However, in 2018 IHG “enhanced” the PointBreaks promotion to a tiered chart. With these changes PointBreaks hotels retailed for either 5,000, 10,000, or 15,000 points per night. Generally, the more “fancy” hotels could be found at the 15,000 point tier but not always.
But since the “enhancement” the quality of the hotels offered on the Pointbreaks list has grown progressively worse.

WHERE IS THE NEW POINTBREAKS LIST?
IHG published their last PointBreaks list on the last Monday in October 2019, which means they should have released their latest list this past Monday (January 27).
Additionally, in the past, IHG has given us a ‘sneak peak’ of the hotels on the list by releasing a limited preview and hyping up the full publication. Everyone (and by everyone, I mean us weird travel geeks) have been waiting in anticipation. Well, it never came.
LoyaltyLobby reached out to an IHG spokesperson, and was told the following:
We do not have a new IHG Rewards Club PointBreaks promotion planned currently. However, our guests can take advantage of our current offers, City Lights (advisory attached) and the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card promotion. We look forward to sharing more details on other promotions in the coming weeks.

FINAL STAMP
Given this news, it appears that IHG may be discontinuing the PointBreaks promotion altogether.
This is disappointing as I’ve booked stays at IHG’s top properties around the world for 5,000-10,000 points including InterContinental Paris le Grand, InterContinental Porto – Palacio das Cardosas, and the InterContinental Budapest.
You may recall a few days ago I wrote a blog covering the new welcome bonus of 140,000 points. Let’s test your math skills…how many 5,000 point reward nights you can extract from 140,000? 😉 #TheMoreYouKnow
Although this is certainly a loss for the IHG Rewards Club program, I still think the new card and welcome bonus is well worth it. Hopefully, IHG returns with another program that’s just as lucrative.
What do you make of the changes? Were you aware that you could obtain so much value from the Pointbreaks list?
