Let’s get straight to the point…some of the links on this site pay 1TattedPassport a referral bonus for anyone that is approved. Are you in the market for a getaway this Fall? IHG may have exactly what you’re looking for. They just released the Pointbreaks list and it is valid for stays through the end of January 2020.

BACKGROUND

Every quarter IHG releases a list of hotels from around the world that are, simply, on sale using points. The hotels on the list charge either 5,000, 10,000, or 15,000 points per night and while this promotion is available for stays for the next few months, you’ll want to book your preferred stay ASAP. The hotels limit the number of nights sold at the discounted rate which means the best properties sell out fast!

The Pointbreaks list used to be a gold mine for travel enthusiasts (including myself). However, it has become less useful over the past several years.

Prior to 2018, IHG offered every hotel on the Pointbreaks list at 5,000 points and there were consistently 100+ hotels on the list including InterContinentals and Hotel Indigo properties. However in 2018, IHG revamped their list, began offering hotels at the current level (5k, 10k, 15k points) and unfortunately, the quality of available hotels on the list left much to be desired too.

POINTS AND CASH

If you are low on points, IHG also gives you the ability to pay partially with points and cash for these bookings and lower the price by 5,000 to 10,000 points per night.

For example, you can expect to pay about $50 and it will lower the cost of your redemption by 5,000 points (or pay about $80 to lower the cost by 10,000 points). This varies by property but tends to represent a good value.

4TH NIGHT FREE WITH IHG PREMER CARD

Obtaining a hotel at a discounted rate is always great but there’s potentially even more value to be had. Specifically, if you have the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card then you get the fourth night free on award redemptions…and yes, that includes on PointBreaks bookings.

At the moment, the card has a welcome bonus of 60K points and offers 15x points on IHG spending. It also offers an anniversary free night certificate, and IHG Platinum status as long as you keep the card. That’s a solid value for a card that has no annual fee.

IHG’s New PointBreaks List

I took a look at the full list and it’s actually a solid IHG PointBreaks list. A few notable properties include:

  • The InterContinental Cartagena De Indias: 15,000 pts/night
  • The InterContinental Costa Rica at Multiplaza Mall: 15,000 pts/night
  • The InterContinental Nairobi: 15,000 pts/night
  • The InterContinental Johannesburg Sandton Towers: 15,000 pts/night

FINAL STAMP

I recommend always taking a look at the IHG Pointbreaks list, you never know what you may find. I travel frequently and sometimes a hotel property just fits the equation. Regardless to if it’s a staycation, roadtrip, or you already have a trip planned in a particular city…. 5,000 points is difficult to beat.

Anyone plan on booking a Pointbreaks Hotel? If so, which one?
