Under normal circumstances, small businesses face many obstacles and there is no doubt that many businesses (big and small) are facing many more challenges due to the current pandemic.
THE GOOD OL’ DAYS
For many years American Express has encouraged consumers to support small businesses by “shopping small” every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. A few years ago, I used to look forward to this day because if you had an Amex card, you could actually make money by making purchases. Those were the good ol’ days.
Well, Amex is back with that same promotion. It’s not quite as lucrative as the good ol’ days but let’s look at the details.
SHOPPING SMALL
At the moment, American Express is encouraging consumers to shop small today (not only in November).
Here is what you need to know:
- Get a $5 statement credit by using your enrolled Card to make a single purchase of $10+
- Use by 9/20/20 (TODAY IS THE LAST DAY)
- Limit of 10 statement credits (total of $50)
- Consumers have to link it to an American Express card (found in your AMEX offers) to receive the benefits

Personally, I found the offer under all of my Amex cards but linked it to my Gold card because I like to eat and there are so many restaurants that are small businesses. This way I will receive the 4x on restaurants and support small business. Everyone wins!
HOW CAN I FIND SMALL BUSINESSES?
So you’re probably wondering how to find eligible small businesses, right? Well, this is the easy part as American Express actually has a SMALL BUSINESS WEBSITE (and map if you’re a visual person like me) that lists the small businesses. Just click on the link above and you’ll be redirected to the website.

Anyone that has this offer on their American Express card is eligible for a $5 statement credit whenever they spend $10+ at a small business. You can earn the statement credit up to 10 times. In other words you save a total of $50, however, you have to link/activate the Amex offer to a specific Amex card before you can take full advantage.
