Late Sunday afternoon, the White House announced the latest travel ban for non-citizens who have been to Brazil in the past 14 days.
The announcement comes in addition to the bans that have already been placed on China, Europe Iran, and the United Kingdom.
According to the statement from the White house concerning COVID-19:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a component of the Department of Health and Human Services, working in close coordination with the Department of Homeland Security, has determined that the Federative Republic of Brazil is experiencing widespread, ongoing person-to-person transmission.
Recently, Brazil has reported an uptick in COVID-19 cases and many experts say that the country has not reached it’s peak.
On Friday, Brazil reported more than 363,000 COVID-19 cases, second only to the US’s 1.6 million infections, according to Johns Hopkins University.
FINAL STAMP
Interestingly, Russia, which has been a hot-bed for the virus for weeks now, has roughly the same number of confirmed cases (345,000+) as Brazil, and more per capita confirmed cases, but no ban has been placed on travelers (or more broadly, travel) to/from Russia.
Personally, I am not familiar with the number of visitors the US receives from Brazil or Russia but I am curious to understand how the determination for these decisions are made.
Just for clarity, this isn’t a political blog. I am simply highlighting the current administrations announcement that anyone that is a NOT a US citizen and has been to Brazil in the past 14 days is now banned from entering the US as this may affect your future travel plans.
What do you think about this ban?
