American Express Membership Reward points are (arguably) the most valuable points on the market and the best way to obtain MR points is by obtaining a card that earns the transferrable currency.
Personally, I love using the American Express Gold Card (READ MORE) as it earns 4x points at restaurants worldwide (including takeout and delivery), 4x points at U.S. supermarkets (up to $25,000 per calendar year), and 3X points on flights booked directly with airlines.
In my opinion, there’s no better card if you eat out and/or shop at supermarkets often.
THE INCREASED WELCOME OFFER
Several months ago, we were seeing a (secret) increased bonus for 60,000 points, but it was challenging for everyone to see.
Well, now the offer is a public and you can earn 60,000 Membership Rewards Points after you spend $4,000 on purchases on your new Card in your first 6 months of Card Membership. Yes, you read it correctly… 6 months!!
Generally, the welcome bonus for the Amex Gold Card is 35,000 points after you spend $4,000 in your first 3 months. Let’s be clear…$4000 in 90 days is not easy for many of us, but $667 per month ($4000 / 6 months) sounds a lot more doable.

Additionally, if you have applied for this card in the last 90 days, with a lower welcome bonus (e.g. 35,000 points), give Amex a call and explain that you applied for this card, was approved, and you’re now seeing an increased offer for the card. Then ask (politely) if you can be matched to the 60,000 point offer. There is no harm in asking.

At the time of publication, the American Express Membership Rewards program has 19 airline and 3 hotel transfer partners and many of them have a 1:1 ratio transfer rate. In other words, 60,000 MR points = 60,000 Delta Miles or even better 60,000 Virgin Atlantic miles because we all know what we can do with them.
At the very minimum, you’re well on your way to having a premium class experience and depending on the loyalty program where you choose to transfer your points, you may have enough points to secure a business class seat just from the welcome bonus.
Don’t forget, Amex said they are adding additional perks soon too so this is the ideal time to apply. 😉
