David Blaine Imitates “Up” (the movie); Ascends Into The Clouds Suspended By Balloons

It’s not too often that I write about individual people on my blog. Although I could detail the weekly brawls that take place on Spirit Airlines, I try to stay in my lane and focus on the tips and “secrets” you may find useful to check off your bucketlist destinations.

This post, however, will be a break from the norm. Additionally, we could all use a distraction. 😉

IS THIS “UP?”

If you’re not familiar with the movie “Up,” it’s a computer animated movie that was released over a decade ago. The film focuses on an elderly widower and homebody named Carl Fredricksen and a young ‘Wilderness Explorer’ (think, boy scout) named Russell who is attempting to earn a merit badge for “assisting the elderly.”

Long story short, Carl ties thousands of balloons to his house, flies away, and sets out on an adventure to fulfill his dream of seeing South America, completing a promise made to his late wife, Ellie. The unexpected surprise, unbeknownst to Carl, is that Russel is in tow.

I have a toddler daughter so I’ve seen this movie a million times and it’s a pretty amazing movie in my opinion.

Caveat: Do NOT watch this movie on an airplane! The first 10 minutes will make you cry, GUARANTEED.

I say all of that to say illusionist David Blaine has a Live event on his youtube channel where he will be doing, essentially, the same thing. Using helium balloons, he will take off and disappear into the clouds, hence the title “Ascension.”

If you’re interested in watching it in real time (…or is it real time since this is an illusion? …or is it an illusion at all?), here is the direct link:

And if you don’t read this blog until later, you can also use the link to simply fast forward (the youtube event is 3 hours long) to the actual ascension, which starts around the 1 hour 57 minute mark.

FINAL STAMP

If you know me personally, you know that I’ve been a David Blaine fan since the 90’s and find his “tricks” / endurance feats fascinating.

Obviously, this post isn’t focused on miles and points but it involves two things that I enjoy…flights and David Blaine so enjoy the distraction.

Here is a bit of a spoiler…he ascends to 25,000+ feet. That’s roughly where commercial planes fly. Could you imagine that?? This guy is wild!! If you have time, take a look at some of the other videos on his channel.

Are you familiar with David Blaine? What do you think about this latest “trick?”
