Tis The Season: American Airlines Gives Every Member A Free Gift

If you are a member of the American Airlines AAdvantage program, you just received a free gift from the loyalty program.

This holiday season the American Airlines AAdvantage program is giving a complimentary gift to all of their AAdvantage members for…well, simply being a member.

According to the promotion page, AAdvantage says:

It’s our way of saying thank you for your loyalty and for letting us be a part of your future travel plans, whether you’re flying to explore new places or reuniting with familiar faces.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Many members have received emails alerting them of the promotion, but if you have yet to receive it, you can also follow these steps:

• Click on “Register Now”
• Log in to your account on aa.com
• Register by 16 December 2020 to claim your holiday gift

And if you’re not a member, Join AAdvantage. It’s free, takes less than a minute to enter your information, and if you plan to take advantage of miles and point promotions, you will eventually need the profile anyway.

After registering, you will (virtually) unwrap your gift.

Unfortunately, my gift was underwhelming as I received 100 AAdvantage bonus miles, but I can also say that I’ve received much more boring emails so it’s about persepctive.

Anyway, gifts can range from a Main Cabin Extra seat to an Admirals Club one-day pass and that’s not bad for simply checking your email.

As you can see from the message above, my registration also unlocks a “promotional bonus” offer for the beginning of 2021.

In my case, I will earn double miles on any flight that I book between 1 January – 28 February 2021.

Personally, that offer doesn’t move the needle and encourage me to fly but it’s also worth noting that your registration enters you into a sweepstakes where:

• Five AAdvantage members will receive 500,000 AAdvantage miles and an all-inclusive 4 night stay at the all-inclusive Hyatt Ziva or Hyatt Zilara resorts (Note: This includes a guest)
• One AAdvantage member will receive 500,000 AAdvantage miles, a 3 night stay at Universal Orlando Resort and includes park passes (Note: This includes up to 3 guests)

But you’ll have to “check back January 1, 2021 for a chance to earn even more rewards.”

Interestingly, after claiming my gift, I was told the 100 miles would take 24 hours to post to my account.

The surprising aspect about this promotion is that it doesn’t make much sense. The AAdvantage program has the unique opportunity to do exactly what it was designed to do…encourage loyalty, mold/sway members behavior, and generate revenue. That is an important foundation to remember during a time when loyalty programs need their members as much as any time in history. I recognize AAdvantage has millions of members but does 100 bonus miles encourage you to fly during a pandemic? I’ll take it but apparently we’re still “going for great.”
