World’s Top 10 Tourist Destinations: New York City Falls Off List

Well, it was good while it lasted.

According to UK-based market research company EuroMonitor Top 100 City Destinations report, New York is out and Asia is in! In fact, the entire continents of North America and South America no longer crack the Top 10 list.

The report highlights the top 100 cities based on international arrivals and forecast projections based on the previous year. In other words, it measured the amount of international tourists who visited a specific city (for at least 24 hours) and then estimates how many people will visit the city the next year.

TOP 10 Cities 2018 (& 2019 Estimates)

In 2018, New York City barely hung on to it’s #8 spot but based on the 2019 numbers thus far, it appears that “Big Apple” will plunge to #11.

I’ve listed the Top 11 in an effort to show the 2018 numbers and the numbers for 2019. The list is as follows:

1. Hong Kong: 29.2 million (#1 in 2018) / 26.7 million (#1 in 2019)
2. Bangkok, Thailand: 24.1 million (#2 in 2018) / 25.8 million (#2 in 2019)
3. London, England: 19.2 million (#3 in 2018) / 19.6 million (#5 in 2019)
4. Macau:  18.9 million (#4 in 2018) / 20.6 million (#3 in 2019)
5. Singapore: 18.5 million (#5 in 2018) / 19.8 million (#4 in 2019)
6. Paris, France: 17.5 million (#6 in 2018) / 19.1 million (#6 in 2019)
7. Dubai, UAE: 15.9 million (#7 in 2018) / 16.3 million (#7 in 2019)
8. New York City, USA: 13.6 million (#8 in 2018) / 14.0 million (#11 in 2019)
9. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: 13.4 million (#9 in 2018) / 14.1 million (#10 in 2019)
10. Istanbul, Turkey: 13.4 million (#10 in 2018) / 14.7 million (#9 in 2019)
11. Delhi, India: 12.6 million (#11 in 2018) / 15.2 million (#8 in 2019)

ANALYSIS

As you can see, London dropped two spots, and Kuala Lumpur dropped one spot.

I find it interesting that, in general, the number of visitors increased 1-2 million in every city (thus retaining their same position) except New York. Hong Kong’s numbers decreased significantly and retained its #1 position which speaks to how popular and amazing Hong Kong is.

I also find it interesting that all North American cities in the TOP 20 experienced a decline based on their 2018 positions.

If you’re curious about other popular North American cities in the Top 100, Miami was ranked 29th, Los Angeles was 33rd, and Las Vegas was 38th.

FINAL STAMP

If you’re curious about positions 12-20…

12. Antalya, Turkey: 12.4 million (2018) / 13.3 million (2019)
13. Shenzhen, China: 12.2 million (2018) / 12.3 million (2019)
14. Mumbai, India: 10.5 million (2018) / 12.4 million (2019)
15. Phuket, Thailand: 10.5 million (2018) / 10.9 million (2019)
16. Rome, Italy: 10,065,400 million (2018) / 10.3 million (2019)
17. Tokyo, Japan: 9,985,100 million (2018) / 10.4 million (2019)
18. Pattaya, Thailand: 9,606,400 million (2018) / 9.9 million (2019)
19. Taipei, Taiwan: 9,597,800 million (2018) / 9.9 million (2019)
20. Mecca, Saudi Arabia: 9,565,200 million (2018) / 9.8 million (2019)

PRO-TIP: I love “sleeper cities”…cities that haven’t hit the radar but are amazing! Hurghada, Egypt was on the list in 2018 but it jumped 45 spots in 2019. I suggest adding it to your 2020 destinations list before all the crowds discover this hidden jewel. Don’t say I didn’t tell ya! 😉

Have you visited any of the cities on this list? What cities would you like to visit?
