Congratulatory messages have been flooding Adeola Sowemimo’s facebook page over the past week and it is much deserved.
Sowemimo has etched her name into the history books. She is, not only, the first African female pilot for luxury airline, Qatar Airways, but also the first woman to pilot the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.
Sowemimo joins an elite league of African women that are leaving their mark in history in an industry that is male dominated.
It has only been 5 years (2014) since Captain Irene Koki made history after piloting Kenya Airways’ Dreamliner aircraft at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi. She was the first African female captain to fly this plane and become certified in the world.
Congratulations are definitely in order! Becoming a commercial pilot requires a lot of time, money, training and dedication. In addition to perseverance and many hours of flying, you’ll need certifications…A LOT of certifications.
It’s hard to believe that it was only in 2014 that the first woman piloted a plane of such calibre but this is an example of what happens when you have a dream and are determined to make it come true.
I fly Qatar Airways often so here’s hoping I see her on my next flight.
What do you think about this feat?
